A 12 page research paper that examines the impact and influence of nineteenth century educator Horace Mann on the public school system and the formulation of this 'common school' philosophy. Mann's influence during the twelve years that he was secretary of the Massachusetts School Board effected lasting change not only in the public school system of Massachusetts, but also in the way that public schooling was perceived throughout the country.
