Theodore Dreiser's 'Sister Carrie': Desire For Change

Number of pages: 5

ABSTRACT:
5 pages in length. In Theodore Dreiser's 'Sister Carrie,' there is no question that desire for change serves to bring about an endless cycle of frustration, only encouraging more of the same unwanted outcome with each attempt at change. Coming to the big city with nothing more than four dollars in her pocket, Carrie takes her spunk and ambition and turns it into the epitome of materialistic aspiration. Somewhere along the line of her quest to better herself, she actually makes her situation worse by constantly trying to change that which can not be altered. One might argue that Carrie was destined to live a life of inner torture until the day she took her last breath, no matter how opulent her existence may have appeared on the outside. When the small-town girl is thrust into the temptations of the cosmopolitan city, she soon finds that she has been completely and utterly swept up by the inherent ills of consumerism. The writer discusses how change brings on an endless cycle of frustration. No additional sources cited.
