ABSTRACT:
A 10 page paper discussing the continuing evolution of advanced practice nursing and the resistance it receives from physician groups. Nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses have filled significant roles in US health care for years. They have legal rights and the technical expertise to take on much of the burden of providing direct health care services, generally under the supervision of an MD. This advanced practice niche is a hybrid position arising from increasing pressures on the still-evolving health care American health care system; it is a position respected in the profession and welcomed by patients.
