ABSTRACT:
This 12 page paper considers the role of government and the evolution of social work in America. The writer explains what each era, reconstruction, progressive and New Deal was about and how the role of the federal government during each of those periods in history. For example, the federal government enacted laws and acts and adopted three amendments to the Constitution during the Reconstruction era but in the Progressive era, citizens were discovering ways to get around certain court decisions and legislatures. The next section defines the phrase "worthy poor" and discusses how that phrase may have been applied during the three eras. Finally, the writer discuses the charity organization movement and the settlement movement and how contemporary social work was influenced by these movements. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
